Students learned two strategies for persuasive writing. First, students learned POW (P - Pick my Idea, O - Organize my Notes, W - Write and Say More). This trick is taught to students as a strategy, or trick, to use with all kinds of writing.

Second, students learned TREE (T - Topic Sentence, Tell what I believe; R - Reasons (3 or more), Why do I believe this? Will my readers believe this? E - Ending, Wrap it up right! E - Examine, Do I have all of my parts?) Students were taught to use TREE for generating and organizing their notes for persuasive essays.

Individual Lesson

Class or Group Lessons
There are a total of 7 lessons for teaching students
POW + TREE classwide. The lessons take 20 - 30
minutes, 3 - 4 times a week. It is important to note
that each lesson my last for more than one session
(e.g., Lesson 2 usually lasts 3 or 4 sessions).

In these lessons, we provide suggestions for adapting
the strategies classwide (e.g, having peers work with
each other). These are only suggestions! These lessons
can align with the writing practices you already
implement in the classroom.

Informational Writing

Narrative Writing

POW+WWW

Students learned two strategies for story writing. First, students learned POW (P - Pick my Idea, O - Organize my Notes, W - Write and Say More). This trick is taught to students as a strategy, or trick, to use with all kinds of writing.

Second, students learned WWW, What = 2, How = 2 (Who is the main character? Where does the story take place? When does the story happen? What does the main character do or want to do; what do other characters do? What happens then? How does the story end? How does the main character feel; how do other characters feel?). Students were taught to use WWW, What = 2, How = 2 as a way for organizing their notes for writing stories.
